January 19, 2012, Milford, CT. – Top medical virologists representing more than a dozen countries gathered at the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C., for the three day inaugural meeting of the Global Virus Network ("GVN"), during which Timothy C. Moynahan was named Chairman of the organization's Executive Board.

The GVN is a global authority and resource for the identification, investigation, and control of viral diseases posing threats to mankind. The organization is committed to: (i) creating a network of experts on medically-important viruses in partnership with existing surveillance programs and public health organizations and to control viral threats by providing a rapid, coordinated approach and comprehensive medical research response for all classes of emerging viral threats to mankind; and (ii) building collaborative research alliances within the network to undertake focused research on diseases with known and suspected viral causes which require specialized expertise from multiple members; and (iii) mitigating the critical lack of current and future medical virologists through practical training programs; and (iv) educating governments, public health organizations and the public at large on viral threats and advocate research and training to address those threats to mankind.

The GVN fulfills a goal of Dr. Robert C. Gallo, co-founder of the GVN, Director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and widely known for his discovery of the first human retroviruses (including one which causes a specific kind of leukemia), co-discovery of HIV and the development of the HIV blood test. "Since HIV/AIDS first appeared," said Dr. Gallo, "I strongly have believed mankind will best be served if the world's leading virologists are organized and better equipped to deal with new and existing viral threats." Continued Dr. Gallo, "The GVN fulfills this mission, and the organization could have no more dynamic nor inspired a leader than Tim Moynahan, who has graciously agreed to serve as Chairman of the Executive Board. Tim's expertise in law and business, combined with his selfless humanitarian activities on behalf of numerous local charities and national organizations, will provide the GVN with the leadership it needs to successfully fulfill its mission."

Said Mr. Moyhahan, "I am both gratified and honored to have been asked to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the GVN by Dr. Gallo. I look forward to working side-by-side with Dr. Gallo and with the distinguished members of the GVN to ensure the organization's success."

Mr. Moynahan, a preeminent litigator, is the founder of Moynahan & Minnella, one of Connecticut's most respected law firms, and also serves as general counsel to the insurance brokerage firm of Park Wilshire. In addition to his role as Chairman of the Executive Board of the Global Virus Network, Mr. Moynahan has been elected to the board of directors of various corporations and charitable organizations, and also serves as a member of the NBA Retired Players Advisory Board, the Post University MBA Advisory Council, the Executive Committee of the Institute of Human Virology, as well as Chairman of the Board of The Robert C. Gallo Foundation for Aids and Cancer Research and President of the Connecticut Chapter of the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the United States.
